Petersburg’s borough assembly didn’t have the numbers present to hold a meeting Monday, July 3. The meeting was not cancelled ahead of the noon start time. Instead, some of the assembly, staff and members of the public turned out to the assembly chambers and waited to see who would show up.

Searchers recovered the body of a 59-year-old Kake man who had fallen from a boat in Frederick Sound Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from the vessel Kalin Ann around 1 p.m. Sunday.

While some returns of wild stock king salmon in Southeast Alaska have been historically low this year, some hatchery produced Chinook are showing up at sites near Petersburg this month. Those include kings making their way back to the Crystal Lake hatchery on southern Mitkof Island and a new release near City Creek on the north end of the island.

Petersburg’s Fourth of July fireworks display this year will not include any sky lanterns. The state fire marshal in May enacted a statewide ban on the paper lanterns that rise up into the sky like a hot air balloon with a flame inside.

The family of Marie Giesbrecht donated this new bench to the Petersburg Public Library. Giesbrecht worked at the library and was killed in a van accident July 4th, 2016. The bench was constructed by Josef Quitslund and Andy Cowan and installed on the summer solstice.
