A large timber sale on the Tongass National Forest is not as large as it was advertised. An environmental watchdog organization has uncovered a U.S. Forest Service document showing a 12-million-board-foot mistake on the Big Thorne timber sale on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The U.S. Forest Service wants to settle the error with the Viking Lumber Company of Klawock, which was awarded the contract for harvesting the timber in 2014.

Voters will get another chance to decide on water fluoridation in Petersburg this October. The borough’s deputy clerk Mindy Swihart this month certified signatures on a petition to vote on fluoride in Petersburg’s water supply.

The Petersburg borough Tuesday morning cut the ribbon and dedicated its newly renovated police station and municipal building. Major portions of the downtown structure, circa 1960, were gutted and rebuilt from the inside out over the past year. Several past employees were at the dedication and had some memories of working in the aging building.

Commercial salmon trollers in Southeast Alaska are already done with their first king salmon opening of the summer season. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced Monday the first king salmon opening would end just before midnight on Tuesday, July 4th.
