Property owners in Petersburg will be paying more tax in the upcoming year. Petersburg’s borough assembly approved a small increase in the property tax rates borough-wide to make up for a potential loss in federal funding. The move was not without debate, however. Some on the assembly sought to remove part of the tax hike during a vote on next year’s borough budget.

Petersburg’s mayor Mark Jensen has resigned. Jensen turned in a short letter of resignation to the borough and is no longer mayor as of 8 a.m. Thursday, May 18. The letter does not give any reason for stepping down.

Petersburg High School baseball closed out the regular season at home at Thunder Mountain last week. The Vikings lost to Thunder Mountain Thursday 7-1, and on Friday dropped a double-header to the Falcons 9-2 and 17-3. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Jim Engell about wrapping up the regular season.

Petersburg High School’s girls track team took first and the boys team took second among the three schools at a meet in Ketchikan last weekend. The girls team ran away with the meet, scoring 326 points, ahead of second place Ketchikan with 92 points. For the boys, the host Kayhi Kings were far out in front, scoring 325 points,to 132 for the Vikings. Thorne Bay came in third for both the boys and the girls.
