Workers clearing slide debris in Petersburg

Petersburg has officially submitted its local disaster declaration to the state in the aftermath of last weekend’s landslide into a downtown stream. The slide was caused by heavy rain and took out a large section of parking lot and hillside behind the public works building on Saturday, filling part of Hammer Slough with a big pile of debris. The city has since built an access road to the bottom of the slide and cleanup work continues. Matt Lichtenstein stopped by the site this (Wednesday) morning and has an update:

There will be no contest for City Council or the Mayor’s seat in Petersburg this fall and there will be one new councilmember. Former day care director pleads guilty to theft

The former director of a non-profit day-care in Petersburg has admitted to stealing money from the organization. Christine Ware pleaded guilty to the theft as part of an agreement with the prosecution this week. The deal does not require the judge impose jail time but through her lawyer, Ware volunteered to serve two weeks even before she is officially sentenced.

Land slides into Petersburg's Hammer Slough

The City of Petersburg is declaring a local disaster after heavy rains caused a substantial landslide into Hammer Slough downtown Saturday afternoon. There were no injuries or damage to nearby homes. However, the slide took out part of the parking lot at the city’s Public Works facility and filled part of the stream with debris. It’s not yet clear how much it will cost for cleanup and repair. City officials are hoping for state assistance. In an emergency meeting Sunday, The City Council approved an initial expense of up to 250 thousand dollars.
