Domestic violence victims group considers name change

Petersburg’s domestic violence advocacy group is considering a name change, although the local non-profit will likely keep the same acronym. WAVE, or Women’s Aid in Violent Emergencies, offers support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The group had a busy 2010 with several events during domestic violence awareness month last October and has several programs underway this year. Joe Viechnicki spoke with rural victims services coordinator Sara Wagstaff and WAVE board member Tara Alcock about the latest news from the Petersburg group.

Port Protection store still running, despite fire

Port Protection’s Wooden Wheel Cove Trading Post is still in business, despite a major fire that tore through its generator shed and warehouse the weekend before last. Port Protection residents and nearby neighbors rallied to save the general store, fuel stop and fish buying station which has served as a central feature of the small, remote community for decades. Borough supporters hope to stay positive

Petersburg officials hope to convince just three more area residents to sign the city’s petition for creation of a new Petersburg borough. They’re also hoping to stay above the contentious debate about the “pros” and “cons” of forming a new borough government. The city’s borough committee this month committed to seeking the remaining signatures on the proposed borough charter and petition without any changes.
