Plaintiffs end suit for alleged assaults at assisted living facility

The City of Petersburg has settled a lawsuit over an alleged sexual assault at the Mountain View Manor assisted living facility. The guardians of a mentally-disabled Petersburg man brought the civil suit against the city in 2007, following allegations that the man was assaulted by another resident of the facility in 2005. As Joe Viechnicki reports, an agreement between the two sides will mean a 100-thousand dollar payment to Raymond Sheppard in return for dropping the case. Joe Viechnicki reports.

Police hire newest officer

Petersburg’s Police Department has hired a local resident to serve as the town’s newest officer. It’s the start of a career for 25-year-old Alice Williams. She’s worked at the department for a couple of months in parking enforcement and animal control. Before Williams heads off to the Law enforcement Academy in Fairbanks for a 13 week course, she’ll spend several weeks working with different field training officers in Petersburg. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Williams and Police Captain John Hamilton when they stopped by KFSK this week.

Paulsen honored with arts award

The Petersburg Mayor’s Award for the Arts this year honors a long-time advocate of the public library, local literary endeavors, musical arts and more. Retired librarian Sue Paulsen helped found The Friends of Petersburg Library and serves as president of the group, which helps support library services and programs. Paulsen was also Petersburg’s 2007 poet laureate and she’s known for her piano performances, accompaniment and instruction. Board votes down fare hike for Hollis-Ketchikan ferry

The board of directors for an independent Southeast Alaska ferry authority Wednesday voted down an increase in fares for ferry service between Ketchikan and Hollis. The changes to the fares were proposed by Inter-Island Ferry Authority’s management staff because of rising fuel costs and anticipated increases in costs for labor and maintenance on the IFA’s ferries. Halibut commission goes with staff-recommended cuts

Longliners in Southeast and the Gulf of Alaska will see big cuts to their quotas this year under catch numbers approved by the International Pacific Halibut Commission Friday morning. Along with the commercial reductions, the Commission is also recommending a limit on the size of halibut that charter boat clients can keep in Southeast.
