Thai exchange student starts school in Petersburg

As the school year gets underway in Petersburg this week, the High School is welcoming a new Rotary exchange student from Thailand. 16-year-old Jinwara Oranrak is from Chom Thong, near the capital of Bangkok. At home, she studies mathematics and science, and she likes swimming. She goes by the nickname “Fer”.
Fer is staying with local families though the school year. She’s been in Petersburg for a little over a week. Her classes at Petersburg high include Problem Solving, English as a Second Language, Aquaculture, US history, and Swimming-fitness. Fer is excited about the school year and spoke with KFSK’s Matt Lichtenstein on the Friday before school started.

Undercover drug investigation leads to arrests

A three-month investigation lead to the arrest of four people in Petersburg this week on felony drug charges. Police allege the suspects sold small quantities of a variety of drugs, including cocaine, morphine and methamphetamine, to a person working undercover for law enforcement. All four suspects have pleaded Not Guilty and the first of their trials is slated for mid-November. The operation was a joint effort of Petersburg police, State Troopers, and the group Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs or SEACAD.

Forest Service Chief visits Tongass workers – Part 1

The Chief of the US Forest Service visited several Alaska towns this past week to meet with agency staff in Southeast and Southcentral. In Petersburg, the agency’s top official also sat down Tuesday for an interview with Matt Lichtenstein, who has the first of two reports:

Tender sinks by Petersburg, all crew safe

The 61-foot salmon tender Emily Jane sank in shallow water at the north end of the Wrangell Narrows outside Petersburg early Friday morning.

Firehall bids come in way lower than expected

It looks like building Petersburgs new fire hall on Haugen drive will cost substantially less than expected. City officials opened five contractor bids this week for the 18 thousand square foot building. All the bids were well below cost estimates and available funding for the project.
