The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has funded road resurfacing, bridge replacement, dock repairs and trail work in the Petersburg area in the past year and a half. The legislation, commonly called the stimulus bill, has brought some high paying jobs to the area. Melati Kaye reports on where stimulus dollars have gone around Petersburg.

Worldwide demand for Chum salmon is on the rise. Once seen only fit for dog food, the pale fish is showing up filleted and dressed, at restaurant chains across the United States. Melati Kaye talked to some industry professionals to find out why the fish are more valued now and where they else they are showing up.

A former Petersburg resident is celebrating the release of his song on the world wide web. Nathan Lopez graduated from Petersburg High School in 1997, and now works as a pastor at the Wasilla Assembly of God church. This month, Lopez released his first song titled “Satisfy” on Amazon and Itunes. Joe Viechnicki spoke to Lopez over the phone from Wasilla.

Residents near some of the lands included in the legislation say they are not happy with the latest revision of the Sealaska lands bill and say they still don’t feel like their concerns are being heard. Senator Lisa Murkowski released proposed changes to Senate Bill 881 earlier this month and said the legislation was still a work in progress. But opponents still want the senator to withdraw the legislation, despite the changes.

Over the 4th of July, Petersburg residents caught up with old friends and classmates that they hadn’t seen in decades. The four day reunion brought together Petersburg High graduates from the classes of 1956 through 1970. Melati Kaye caught up with some of the alumni during the parade.
