Moose hunters have record season

Central Southeast Alaska had a record moose harvest this year. The month-long season closed on the 15th and by then, hunters had taken a t least 107 moose. This year’s liberalized antler restrictions made a broader segment of the bull population legal to kill. Harbor Board recommends Scow Bay lease

Petersburg’s Harbor Advisory Board is recommending the City lease property to a boat haulout company at the Scow Bay turnaround. That could pave the way for the City Council to approve the lease, which has been on the table at numerous meetings. The Harbor Board made its decision Thursday night.

Kake intertie planners consider concerns over road

Planners are taking a closer look at the problems of combining a road with the power line project from Petersburg to Kake. The power line itself is not controversial. Rather, it’s the State’s proposed road that’s prompted concerns from Petersburg and opposition from the neighboring, roadless community of Kupreanof. Study to examine impacts of Southeast sea otters

Commercial dive fisherman and crabbers in Southeast Alaska are worried about losing crab, urchins, sea cucumbers and clams to what may be an expanding population of sea otters in the region. The Alaska Seagrant Program has now agreed to fund a new study of sea otters impact on commercial seafood species.

Humpy 500 carts race to glory

Twelve young daredevils sped down PFI hill in Petersburg Saturday for the annual Humpy-500 Go-cart race. It was the fifteenth year of the popular local event which is sponsored by Icicle Seafoods and other local businesses. Drivers and pit crews build their sea-themed carts with a 55-gallon drum and a variety of wheels and hardware. The top prizes go to the teams with the most creative costumes and carts. This year, the designs included a pirate ship, a blowfish, a sockeye salmon, and a spot-shrimp. Matt Lichtenstein produced this audio-postcard of the event:
