The state has rejected Petersburg’s request to expand its electrical service area. The new boundaries would have included Ruth lake in nearby Thomas Bay, where local officials hope to eventually build a new hydro-electric plant. A service extension might have given Petersburg more of an advantage in its competition for a federal permit to pursue the new hydro project. However, state regulators say Petersburg needs to provide more information to justify such an expansion.

Petersburg’s chamber of commerce salmon derby yielded a lot fewer fish this year, but the winner was bigger than ever and participation was up. Alex Hotz has more on the results.

Forty-eight Petersburg High School seniors are graduating today, and many of them will be taking the next step in their lives far away from Mitkof Island. Last week Alex Hotz visited science teacher Victor Troutman’s senior chemistry class to speak with some of the departing seniors about their plans following graduation.

A Petersburg art teacher, Ashley DuRoss, will be displaying some of her paintings at the Clausen Museum until June 20. The exhibit called “Hybrid Spaces” opens today and there will be an artist reception at the museum from 5-7PM tonight. Petersburg has chosen a contractor to repair the problematic Cabin Creek water pipeline and the work should soon be moving ahead despite another potential setback that cropped up this week.
State officials say they want more detail on the project plans before they’ll give the green light for work on the dam itself, which is the second phase of the project. City officials say they can still move ahead with the first phase as planned. That involves the repair and upgrade of the existing pipeline. In a special meeting this week, the City Council agreed to award the construction bid, so phase one can be finished in time to provide water from Cabin Creek this summer. However, the councilors also voiced frustration and disappointment with the work of the city’s engineering consultants.
