A Petersburg City Councilor is suing the city’s harbormaster. Councilor Bob Nilson’s lawsuit accuses Harbormaster Jim Stromdahl of invasion of privacy and defamation. Nilson threatened to sue this spring after publically alleging that Stromdahl and others had been involved in an effort to spy on his home. Stromdahl denied those allegations, which stem partly from concerns some city employees raised about city councilors getting together outside of public meetings.

Petersburg’s School Board approved a series of new policy changes, discussed the attendance policy and other issues Tuesday. Alex Hotz has an overview of this months regular Board meeting.

The City Council took on Petersburg’s tax assessment methods this week. The councilors met in their annual role as the Board of Equalization Monday night. Their review of a couple individual property tax appeals lead to some broader debate and criticism of the local assessor’s approach.

Governor Sarah Palin signed a new education bill into law during a brief stop in Petersburg today.

The proposed rate hike at Petersburg’s Assited Living wing is on hold for another two weeks. The thousand-dollar a month increase is aimed at reducing the facility’s deficit, but some family members say it unfairly puts the burden on residents. After more testimony and discussion Monday night, the council decided to postpone the final vote until their next meeting.
