Track season is underway for Petersburg High School. It’s a popular sport among students again this year. There are about 40 kids taking part, but only fourteen vikings traveled to the first competition in Ketchikan last weekend because of conflicts with other activities. Petersburg finished fourth behind Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka, but coach Brad Taylor is hopeful the Vikings will be able to field a stronger group for the upcoming meet in Juneau, early next month. Petersburg’s School Board Tuesday opted to award a roofing replacement contract to the low bidder, despite an earlier recommendation against that award from the project’s architect. Board members agreed that Juneau-based Bicknell, Incorporated had the experience to install the roof they wanted on the Elementary school. The board also approved a budget for next year.. Joe viechnicki reports on some of the board decisions from this months regular meeting.

Petersburg’s City Council will wait until next month to vote on a service charge increase for residents of the city’s Mountain View Manor Assisted Living facility. The council Monday tabled an ordinance with a one-thousand dollar monthly increase for assisted living, after a former councilor and local resident questioned it’s fairness.

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Land Office says it may try to give some of its land holdings at Papke’s Landing south of Petersburg back to the state. Land Office officials, last Friday, updated area residents on the latest plans for the dock and parking area.

With two Petersburg City Councilors excused from last night’s meeting, the Mayor and four remaining members split a couple votes and fell short of passing several measures Monday. One vote would have allowed for a phased approach to fixing the cabin creek water pipeline. The city’s engineer recommended having a contractor start work on replacing and upgrading the damaged pipe, without waiting on other work at the dam itself. The issue could be back up before the Council at a future meeting.
