Petersburg’s school district has a new superintendent for next year. The school board last week hired a 59-year-old man from Oregon, the former superintendent in Nenana.

Public input on the design of an new Alaska state ferry in Petersburg last week focused on everything from the vessel’s interior to its ability to move freshly caught seafood out of town. Marine Highway system officials last Tuesday fielded questions and comments on the design of a new Alaska class ferry.

A fun and educational morning is on tap for local children and their families tomorrow at Rae C. Stedman Elementary school and the Petersburg Children’s Center. The Early Childhood Family Fair happens every two years and offers activities for kids, fire trucks, boats, food, and information for parents. Joe viechnicki talked with a few local students, parents and educators about their memories of the fair, and what they look forward to this year.

Alaska’s senators are hoping to provide grant money for Southeast Alaska timber companies for upgrading equipment or transitioning to other industries. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich introduced legislation last week that could provide up to 40 million dollars for established companies to retool.

Petersburg’s City Council capped off Monday night’s meeting by voting down a motion that was not included in their published notice or council packet for the meeting. Councilor Melinda Hofstad sought to end use of the city attorney for what she called a private lawsuit between city councilor Bob Nilsen, the city manager and the harbormaster.
