Petersburg resident Joseph Tagaban, who is fifteen years old, has been in and out of cancer treatment for two years. He’s now in remission and received a stem-cell transplant in December in Seattle to help protect his health. The family is waiting for his neutrophil counts to be high enough for him to leave the hospital.

Cancer is not a simple disease and when people in remote Southeast Alaska get cancer, things may be even more complicated. They might have to travel to specialized care which can be expensive and adds additional stress. An organization in Petersburg is trying to make things a little easier.
