Petersburg High School’s baseball team wrapped up the season with two losses at the regional tournament in Juneau last week.

The Vikings lost 12-0 to Thunder Mountain last Thursday and then bowed out of the tournament with a 20-0 loss to Sitka on Friday.

Coach Jim Engell said the loss of senior pitcher Colby Bell to an injury and a relatively young team showed up in the two games.

“We only had three guys on the field that were on our tournament squad from last year,” Engell said, adding, “There were five actually there. Jessie Lantiegn was playing for, when we eventually played Sitka in the second game, Jesse was on our team last year. He’s playing for Sitka this year and Colby’s on the bench with his injury but I think our inexperience really started to show.”

The Vikings had trouble hitting and didn’t get a runner past second base in either game. Engell said he was pleased with a couple things that happened during tournament, including Catherine Cardenas’ first hit for the team, strong play from Chauncy Sandhofer and some good catching and pitching by Ethan Bryner.

Injured pitcher Colby Bell was named to the all-conference team. Chauncey Sandhofer and Catherine Cardenas won good sports awards at the tournament. The team loses two seniors to graduation, Bell and Kayin McKay.

Ketchikan beat Juneau Douglas for the regional tournament title. Both those teams play in the state tournament starting on Thursday in Anchorage.
