A fire engine at the scene on South 2nd St. (Ari Snider/KFSK)

Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department and the police department responded to an active fire at the Public Works department buildings on South 2nd Street. The time was about 7:30pm Monday. There were no reported injuries. The fire was located in the Public Works maintenance shop where heavy machinery work is done. It is believed that the fire started in an area where spare tires are stored. The blaze caused inflated tires to overheat and explode. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. At least two city vehicles were severely damaged and probably totaled. The shop building is still standing but there is heavy smoke damage and some heat damage inside. This is a developing story, KFSK will have more information as it becomes available.

Editor’s note: This story has been corrected. The PVFD says the cause of the fire is still under investigation and the blaze was not caused by exploding tires.
