This week’s projects with teacher Karen Nelson of California (Photo courtesy of the Muskeg Maleriers)

Local rosemaling painters and those wanting to learn have a chance to take a class with a gold medalist in Petersburg this week.

The Muskeg Maleriers, a local group dedicated to the traditional Norwegian painting, have brought to town Karen Nelson for four days of classes. Nelson is originally from Wisconsin and now lives in California. She was awarded a gold medal in 2012 from the Vesterheim, the National Norwegian-American Museum and Heritage Center in Decorah, Iowa. She’ll be teaching classes this week in the Os style. Joe Viechnicki spoke with her about her background and the classes she’ll be teaching.

The classes are upstairs at the Sons of Norway Hall. The beginner’s class is mostly full but spaces are available still in the intermediate classes. They run Thursday September 12 through Sunday, September 15th. Sign up with Polly at 518-0866 or Sally at 518-0601.
