Work is underway on the first phase of playground improvements at Sandy Beach Park in Petersburg.

The Petersburg Rotary Club has partnered with the Petersburg Indian Association and others on new ground work and playground equipment. That will replace the playground area built by the club around four decades ago. And organizers hope it will eventually include, drums, chimes and other musical instruments for use in the outdoor park.

Wednesday afternoon they gathered to mark the ground breaking in anticipation of Rock N Road construction starting site preparation work Thursday (yesterday).

Local Rotarian Desi Burrell said the planning for it started when she was president of the club

Joe Viechnicki spoke with Burrell and neighboring home owner Glo Wollen about the history of the project and the latest plans.
