Around 50 Petersburg residents attended a community meeting Tuesday night about proposed state budget cuts to the local school district. As Angela Denning reports, participants talked about what the future of education might look like in the remote island community of 3,000 residents.

Petersburg School District has a better idea of how a $1.4 million state cut would affect the local schools. School officials have been digesting the proposed cut for nearly three weeks now and say the cuts would affect classrooms.

Petersburg High School senior, Eva Lenhard, made the All-Northwest choir for the second time in her high school career. She’s the first singer in the school’s history to be accepted twice to the music festival. The event, which was held in February, brings together the best musicians from six states. Four singers from Southeast made the cut.

Petersburg filmmaker, Kelly Bakos, is screening her full-length documentary on orphaned elephants at the Wright Auditorium Thursday at 7 p.m. The family-friendly film, a Herd of Orphans, has been shown all over the world and has received 15 awards so far.
