SE AK summer troll season opens Wednesday

The commercial troll season for king salmon in Southeast Alaska opens Wednesday, July 1. The first summer opening might be a little longer this year with a boost in the catch allowed under the Pacific Salmon Treaty with Canada. The new month also signals the end of spring trolling that targets hatchery kings.

Ravens trail work resumes, cabin replacement on tap

The second year of reconstruction for a popular hiking trail near Petersburg is starting up this summer and is on schedule to be finished later this year. In addition, the U.S. Forest Service’s Ravens Roost cabin at the end of that trail has funding secured to be replaced next year.

GOP challengers down to two for central Southeast house seat

The list of Republican candidates seeking to represent island communities of Southeast Alaska in the state house is down to two. A Sitka man has withdrawn his name from the August primary, leaving challengers on Prince of Wales Island and Hoonah. The winner of that primary race will take on the Sitka incumbent democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins in the fall.
