Property owners in the Petersburg borough could see savings on their tax bill in the upcoming year based on a proposed budget now before the borough assembly. That draft plan increases spending in most general fund departments and uses savings to balance the budget.

In the last week of April, a captain and senior flight instructor finished off a nearly 30-year-career with Alaska Airlines the same way he started it – flying the “milk run” through Southeast Alaska. 60-year-old John “Hal” Andersen says that challenging flight is what hooked him on the airline.

State officials this week explained the details of a health mandate for commercial fishing vessels and crews and the steps that will be taken this year to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Tuesday narrowly passed a local health directive for sheltering some members of the community needing a COVID-19 quarantine. It was a split vote to authorize the borough to provide for health care workers, first responders and homeless individuals and families. Opponents on the assembly and the community opposed including the possibility of forcing anyone to quarantine.
