Petersburg officials bemoan reports of cruise waste dumping

Complaints about cruise ships discharging wastewater have reached Petersburg’s borough assembly. Elected officials say they’re looking into the issue.

Petersburg police to end round the clock coverage

Petersburg’s police chief says the community will no longer have round-the-clock police coverage starting in late August or early September. That’s in response to the borough assembly’s decision last week not to fill a vacant sergeant’s job.

The filing period has started to run for elected office here in Petersburg and potential candidates have a little under a month to decide. Petersburg mayor Mark Jensen plans to run again, as does assembly member Jeigh Stanton Gregor.

Health providers urge vaccination with measles case

Health care providers are renewing their recommendation for vaccination following the state’s first recorded case of the measles since 2015. The state’s division of public health on July 16th confirmed a case in an unvaccinated teenager from the Kenai Peninsula who had traveled to Arizona and Seattle. Alaska is the 29th state with a confirmed measles case this year.

Assembly OKs water, sewer borrowing ballot question in first reading

Voters in Petersburg this fall may decide on whether the borough should continue with repairs and replacements for the local water and sewer systems. State loans for up to eight million dollars would be repaid by utility customers and could lead to another increase in rates.
