Former Petersburg teacher, fisherman offers first book

Small town life, relationships in commercial fishing families and the impacts of Individual Fishing Quota on a community are a few of the themes in a new book of fiction based on Petersburg. Christi Slaven, former fisherman and teacher published her first book in 2018, called “Home Is Where The Fish Are.”

Petersburg, other Southeast towns show population increase

For the first time in seven years, Petersburg’s population increased in 2018. That’s according to the latest estimates from the Alaska Department of Labor. The Petersburg borough population was estimated to be 3,198 people in July of 2018, up 61 people from the year before.

PHS boys basketball second at Nome tourney

Petersburg High School’s boys basketball team took second place at a tournament in Nome over the weekend with two wins and one loss. The girls team lost three games at the tournament. Coaches for both teams are glad for the experience gained against some larger schools.
