Read MoreIn early November Petersburg’s borough assembly voted to send a letter to the chief of the U.S. Forest Service asking for information on Tongass National Forest timber sales. The letter cites a 2016 review by staff in the Forest Service’s Washington office that detailed problems with oversight and administration of timber sales. The internal review was published by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, or PEER, a nationwide watchdog group based in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Read MoreA local woman who just finished up a two-year stint with the Peace Corps in Madagascar is opening up a show of drawings and photographs at a Petersburg gallery this month. 25-year-old Hillary Hunter taught English language to middle-school-aged kids and adults during her time in that island nation off the coast of Africa. It’s Hunter’s first solo art show and it’s called “Vita Gasy,” or made in Madagascar. It features about 40 pen, colored pencil and paint drawings, along with photographs of landscapes and people.
