New regional forester says agency is responding to timber sale concerns

In early November Petersburg’s borough assembly voted to send a letter to the chief of the U.S. Forest Service asking for information on Tongass National Forest timber sales. The letter cites a 2016 review by staff in the Forest Service’s Washington office that detailed problems with oversight and administration of timber sales. The internal review was published by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, or PEER, a nationwide watchdog group based in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Peace Corps volunteer opens art show in Petersburg

A local woman who just finished up a two-year stint with the Peace Corps in Madagascar is opening up a show of drawings and photographs at a Petersburg gallery this month. 25-year-old Hillary Hunter taught English language to middle-school-aged kids and adults during her time in that island nation off the coast of Africa. It’s Hunter’s first solo art show and it’s called “Vita Gasy,” or made in Madagascar. It features about 40 pen, colored pencil and paint drawings, along with photographs of landscapes and people.

Petersburg budgeting to replace trash baler

New baler equipment is on the Christmas wish list for the Petersburg borough’s sanitation department. Public works director Chris Cotta Monday updated the borough assembly on the latest failure of machines used to compact and ready Petersburg’s garbage for shipping to a landfill in Washington state. The assembly took the first step toward replacing those machines but had some questions for Cotta.

PHS basketball opens season against Ketchikan, Metlakatla

Petersburg High School’s basketball teams opened their season last weekend with games against Ketchikan and Metlakatla. The boys varsity team lost four games on the road while the girls team lost two at home.
