PHS swimmers have second meet in Sitka

Petersburg High School swimmer recorded some top finishes at a meet in Sitka last weekend, the second competition of the season for the teams. Petersburg coach Andy Carlisle said a tough week of practice and long travel showed up in the teams’ times.

Warm, dry weather this September means dropping levels at reservoirs that provide hydro-electricity in Southeast Alaska. Utility managers are hoping for a return of the rainy weather and say Petersburg should have enough hydro-electric capacity to avoid diesel generation in the short-term.

Petersburg Medical Center treat flu cases from cruise ship

The same day Petersburg’s post office was shut down last Thursday with a hazardous materials spill, the Petersburg Medical Center was treating an outbreak of influenza among passengers and employees on a cruise ship docked here. Hospital officials say it was an early warning about the upcoming flu season.
