Photographer, naturalist, writer reflects on emotions of animals

One of the keynote speakers at Petersburg’s Rainforest Festival this year was Juneau photographer, writer and naturalist Bob Armstrong. The former Alaska Department of Fish and Game fishery biologist and research supervisor has authored numerous books and articles on the animals, plants and insects of Alaska. He’s been photographing and writing about the natural world since 1960. Lately he has used GoPro and game trail cameras to capture video of Alaska’s animals, birds and fish. Some of the behavior he’s recorded has him wondering about the emotional lives of animals.

ADFG relocates two nuisance bears from Petersburg

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has trapped and moved two black bears that have been looking for an easy lunch and getting into garbage cans in Petersburg this summer.
Petersburg’s Police Department has been fielding calls about nuisance bears around town. The borough is asking residents to make sure household trash is secure until it is picked up by the garbage truck.

Six seek two seats on Petersburg assembly

It’s a crowded race for two seats on Petersburg’s borough assembly this fall. Six people are running in the October 3rd election. Some are relatively new to local politics challenging two incumbents hoping to hold onto their seats. The challengers are making an issue of capital project spending by the municipal government.

Broken bridge closed on forest road west of Petersburg

The U.S. Forest Service has closed a forest road on Kupreanof Island west of Petersburg because of an unsafe bridge. Engineers for the agency doing routine maintenance checks found broken log stringers on the bridge. It’s on the Tonka road system on the Lindenberg Peninsula of Kupreanof Island.
