It’s a long way from a done deal but Petersburg could see federal funding to prepare for construction of a new hospital building.

Hunters have set a new record for the month-long moose season on the islands and mainland of central Southeast Alaska.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Tuesday passed a resolution seeking changes in operations and permitting for precious metal mines in British Columbia near salmon rivers that flow into Southeast Alaska.

The regional council that recommends changes to subsistence hunting and fishing regulations in Southeast Alaska is backing a new draw permit hunt for moose on two islands in the region. The change could provide permits to rural residents of the region for harvest of bull moose without antler restrictions. But it’s opposed by federal and state wildlife managers for potential impact on the moose population.

Voters mostly backed incumbents for a borough election in Petersburg Tuesday that saw strong early absentee voting and plenty of choices for some elected seats.
