The Petersburg volunteer fire department responded to a shed fire early Sunday morning at 3 mile out the road. Dave Berg, a spokesperson for the department said they received a call in the middle of the night from a renter on the property.

Petersburg’s Parks and Recreation department this summer has been cleaning up some damage around the borough-owned ballfields and trail to Hungry Point. It’s part of ongoing vandalism that forced the borough’s Parks and Recreation director Donnie Hayes to shut down some of the buildings and look into transferring the maintenance of the fields to the local Little League.

Consultants drafting two long-term planning documents for Petersburg have extended a public comment period this summer and will be releasing more additions to the draft documents. The borough’s comprehensive plan and waterfront master plan are still on track to be completed this fall.

The U.S. Forest Service and Alaska Mental Health Trust have signed an agreement to move forward with a land exchange in Southeast Alaska. The two sides say the agreement is a milestone in a long process of swapping some Tongass land for acreage near a half dozen Panhandle communities.

A regional business plan development competition has announced 12 semi-finalists for the third year of the program and two of the businesses selected are based in Petersburg. Two finalists will be chosen from that group and will receive funding to help get those businesses launched.
