92-year-old Tom Lewis of Petersburg remembers WWII

Even at the age of 92, Tom Lewis is not an idle man. When you walk into his home across from the South Boat Harbor, you’ll notice a box on the couch filled with tiny wood shavings. Lewis is a whittler and makes what he calls “tramp art”. He’s worked with wood most of his life. He never went to high school.

Herring surveys in Juneau District continue

Aerial surveys of herring spawn have continued in the Juneau District by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The department conducted surveys of Seymour Canal Tuesday and Wednesday, and lower Lynn Canal Wednesday. They say survey conditions were excellent.

Gerald Lind one of three WWII veterans visiting D.C.

Three World War II veterans in Petersburg left Tuesday for Washington D.C. The three are traveling, along with chaperones, as part of Honor Flights, a program to get vets to the country’s capital to see the World War II memorial. Gerald Lind, who turns 89 in a few weeks, shares his memories of the war.
