Brewfest and Chili cookoff set for tonight

Petersburg’s amateur brewmasters and culinary artists will compete for bragging rights tonight at the 6th annual Devils Thumb Brewfest and Chili Cookoff. The event in the sons of Norway hall includes live music along with food and drink. Hunters brought in 89 moose during the month-long hunt in the Petersburg Wrangell and Kake area of central Southeast. That’s the fifth highest total on record and 8 more than last year.

Harbor projects take a step forward

Petersburg is making some progress on a couple of major harbor projects. The Harbor board has approved a plan for the new commercial drive down dock and the City Council this week approved a 180 thousand dollar contract for a completed design and bid documents. Meanwhile, the North Harbor replacement project received a high ranking from the state’s Harbor grant program.

Petersburg Councilor calls for more borough advocacy

Petersburg’s city council needs to take a more active role in advocating for borough formation. That’s according to the council’s newest member as well as a member of the public who emphasized the issue at Monday’s regular meeting, prompting the school superintendent to speak in support of the effort. It was one of several borough topics that came up Monday night, though the longest discussion took place behind closed doors.

Senate will consider secure schools renewal

A bipartisan group of US Senators wants to extend the expiring Secure Rural Schools program for another five years. The annual payments have provided hundreds of millions of dollars for school districts in national forests around the country, including schools throughout Southeast Alaska.
