Artists open show of new abstract works

A two-person exhibit opens tonight at the Clausen Museum in Petersburg featuring dozens of new abstract paintings and drawings by two well-known local artists, Pia Reilly and John McCabe. The joint show, called “Beyond the Lines,” was McCabe’s idea and is somewhat of a new direction for Reilly. Joe Viechnicki spoke with the two artists this week as they hung their new work.

Petersburg’s elected leaders have mixed feelings about continuing with a legal challenge to the Alaska Redistricting Board’s plan for new legislative boundaries. And local leaders will soon have to decide whether to spend more money on the lawsuit.

Bear cub one of many moved out of town

There’s been bear trouble in towns around Southeast this summer and fall as the animals wander in search of easy food sources like garbage cans. There have been bears spotted walking down the sidewalk and through backyards as recently as yesterday. Local authorities have captured six bears so far including three cubs and released them in the forest, far away from residences. On recent rainy morning, Matt Lichtenstein rode along with state wildlife biologist Rich Lowell as he set out to release a young cub caught near a downtown seafood plant in Petersburg.

Fall dogs top-off seine season

Last weekend’s fall chum salmon opening in Southern Southeast marked the end of the seine season for the most part in the panhandle this year. It looks like the 2011 seine fishery had a record value with the combination of a big pink harvest in northern southeast, good chum catches in the south, and high prices all around.

New City Manager starts work

Petersburg’s New City Manager has been busy meeting with city staff and other officials and familiarizing himself with local issues. From Borough Formation and Harbor improvements to the new library project and street repairs, Manager Steve Giesbrecht has his work cut out for him. Giesbrecht took the job in Petersburg after serving an eight-year tenure as manager in the similar-sized town of Electra, Texas. As he told KFSK’s Matt Lichtenstein, Giesbecht spent much of his career in the private sector
