Scientists recover reptile fossil near Kake

Scientists have removed the fossilized remains of an ancient ocean-going reptile from the rocky shores of an island near Kake in Southeast Alaska. Previous work at the site already produced evidence of sea creatures from the age of the dinosaurs, however, these latest bones may be the most intact example of this species of ancient creature ever found in North America.

Jet ski TV show stops in Petersburg

Family and friends welcomed the cast and crew of a new reality TV show as they pulled their jet skis up to the dock in Petersburg’s North Harbor Wednesday afternoon. Three of the five cast and crew members have ties to Petersburg and the group plans to film along the coast of Alaska for the next few weeks.

Planning group addresses energy demand

A short-term solution to meeting energy shortages in Southeast Alaska could be wood pellets, according to a group that met Tuesday in Petersburg. Using the processed wood to reduce high electrical energy demands was the main topic of discussion at a public meeting about the Southeast Alaska Integrated Resource Plan or SEIRP. That’s a document that’s supposed to outline 50-year energy demands and goals for Southeast communities.

Company plans powerline south of airport land

Private company Cascade Creek’s planned power plant at Cascade Creek in Thomas Bay north of Petersburg would require a new transmission line to get electricity from the plant to the electrical grid in Petersburg. A company representative last week said there’s been a change in plans for crossing Mitkof Island with that new power line. Cascade Creek’s project manager Chris Spens says the line will not be located on airport land owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation but will instead be moved south. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Spens about the latest plans.
