Jensen confirmed to Board of Fisheries again

Petersburg fisherman John Jensen was confirmed to a fourth term on the Alaska Board of Fisheries Friday morning during a joint session of the legislature. The vote among the House and Senate was 50 to 9 in support of his confirmation. Southeast shellfish and finfish proposals will be up for board discussion in early 2012.
Jensen is a commercial crabber and longliner who also owns a boat rental business in Petersburg. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Jensen shortly after Governor Sean Parnell announced his reappointment in late March.

Library advocates hope for bond issue, more City Council news

Petersburg’s City Council last night got an overview of the funding plan for Petersburg’s new public library construction and it includes a bond measure for up to a million and a half dollars. Library advocates who spoke at Monday’s council meeting said putting the bond measure on the ballot would leverage the additional million dollars needed to round out the building fund. In other business Monday, the council learned that the city’s insurance costs will be much higher than expected in the coming year. Forest Service wants to allow log raft storage in popular dungy spot

Boaters in the Wrangell Narrows south of Petersburg could see more bundles of logs rafted up and towed through the tight waterway south to a sawmill in Klawock in the next few years. The U.S. Forest Service is applying for permits that would allow a company to gather log rafts at an anchorage along the Woewodski Island shoreline commonly called “The Pothole.” Its also an area fished by some of Petersburg’s Dungeness crab fleet and they’re concerned about bark potentially ruining crab habitat. Various government agencies and stakeholders are trying to come up with conditions to allow log raft storage in the pothole again.

Marchers rally for respect

An estimated 100 people marched down main street in Petersburg and gathered in Petersburg’s city council chambers Thursday to raise awareness about the problems of domestic violence and sexual assault.
