The outlook is looking a little brighter for Petersburg’s visitor industry this upcoming summer with several cruise companies planning new stopovers in and around Alaska’s Little Norway. Interest from independent travelers hoping to explore the area also may be up from last year.

A free book giveaway program at libraries across the country has fallen victim to federal budget cuts. The program has distributed thousands of books to children in Petersburg over the last three decades. Meanwhile, another privately-funded book giveaway program for the youngest readers is starting up locally.

Museum showcases private collections

Art lovers can view some work from private collections in Petersburg tonight at a fund raiser for the Clausen Museum called a “Foolish evening of collections.” The night starts off at the museum with an exhibit of works loaned off local walls and display cases. Four home-owners are also welcoming in the public to view their work later in the evening. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Clausen director Sue McCallum about the evening’s offerings.

Lawmakers consider autism coverage law for insurers

Alaskan lawmakers are considering legislation that would require health insurance companies cover the diagnosis and treatment for autism. Supporters say the measures would help children access better treatment for the disorder. As it is, parents of autistic children say they have to write grants and pay thousands out of pocket to cover therapy and counseling costs.

Legislative committee moves anti-roadless resolution

The Alaska House Special Committee on Energy this week moved forward a resolution opposing
the Forest Service’s Roadless Rule because it could restrict hydro-electric development on National Forest land in Alaska. Community leaders and energy officials testified this week that temporary roadless restrictions were already having an impact on energy development and they worried that the application of the permanent rule could jeopardize future projects.
