Viking cheerleaders, pep band wow at regionals

Petersburg's High School cheerleaders took first place for their performance at the regional basketball tournament in Juneau this month. The Viking cheer squad was joined at the event by the High School Pep Band, which brought the largest contingent of students from Petersburg, many of whom played with the region-wide All-Star band. Matt Lichtenstein checked in with their coaches and conductor after they returned this week.

Drug-detecting canine visits Petersburg schools

Petersburg students met a drug detecting dog and his handler from Juneau this month. The Petersburg School District invited the team to an assembly for the middle and high schools. It was just an informational visit this time around, and the kids got a kick out of the cute K9. But administrators may bring the dog back for an actual search at some point in the future. It’s part of a broader community effort to battle substance abuse among teens.

Council backs national seafood marketing effort

Petersburg’s city council this week voted to support the creation of a national seafood marketing fund. That’s despite some misgivings about partnering with states and organizations that may want to market farmed fish or even genetically modified seafood.

Council hears opposition to harbor WiFi

A city proposal to offer a wireless internet signal in Petersburg’s harbors ran into some opposition this week from local representatives for two telecommunications companies. The harbor department is hoping to offer WiFi service to boat owners tied up in Petersburg’s three harbors as soon as this summer. However, Petersburg’s city council will wait to decide on the new service.

Petersburg likely done with Ruth Lake hydro

It looks like the city of Petersburg may be done trying to pursue development of a hydro-electric power plant at Ruth Lake, a high mountain lake on the mainland’s Thomas Bay north of town. Petersburg has spent over two years pursuing the preliminary permit to develop Ruth Lake as a second power source. Both the city of Angoon and the Wrangell borough also applied for the permit. Last month an appeals court in the nation’s capital ruled against Petersburg’s challenge of the 2009 decision to award that permit to Angoon based on a random drawing.
