It looks like Petersburg's shipyard could be back in business this year under new, local ownership. Piston and Rudder Service owner Mike Luhr says his business made an offer to purchase the property and he is optimistic the deal will be finalized within two months time.

With the 2011 commercial Halibut season underway this month, the Director of the International Pacific Halibut Commission has been visiting Southeast Alaska to observe landings and speak with harvesters. Director Bruce Leaman has faced plenty of questions since the Commission’s January meeting which resulted in another year of huge cuts for the commercial longline fleet as well as a new size restriction for halibut landed on charter boats.

Supporters of several electrical power projects in Southeast are continuing planning work, despite this month's court ruling applying the nationwide roadless conservation rule to the Tongass National Forest. Meanwhile federal and state officials say they don't yet know what effect the ruling will have on Southeast electrical projects.

Petersburg schools are expecting a substantial deficit again next year. As a result, the administration is looking at staff cuts. The school board heard the news during its regular meeting last week.
