School district opposes athletic conference changes

Petersburg’s school district is opposing a statewide realignment of the conferences for high school basketball and volleyball teams. The change would shuffle Southeast’s high school programs, dropping some of Petersburg’s traditional rivals into a different conference. Joe Viechnicki reports.

Teachers, parents lobby for middle school principal

Teachers and parents urged Petersburg’s school board this week to keep a principal at Mitkof Middle School. The school district announced this month it would not be funding the current configuration of principal and district athletic director in the budget for next year. Staff and parents Tuesday commended the job done by Mike Brawner, who’s midway through his second year in that job. Joe Viechnicki reports.

Petersburg police file for separate union

Petersburg Police Department employees are trying to establish their own union. The new organization would split-off from the larger, Petersburg Municipal Employees Association which has been in a contract dispute with the city for nearly a year and may soon vote to go on strike. An attorney for the police workers says they are not receiving adequate representation in the bigger union, so they’d like to represent themselves.

City to rework boat-haul lease

Petersburg may re-work its lease with a boat-hauling business in scow bay. The City Council Monday night considered removing a requirement that Island ventures carry pollution insurance. However, the business’s owner raised additional concerns about the lease requirements, and asked to be let out of the agreement altogether.

Feds consider taking Eastern Steller Sea Lions off Endangered Species List

It may be time to take the eastern Steller Sea Lion off the endangered species list. That’s according to the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is doing a comprehensive review to decide whether the population is free of threats and healthy enough to warrant the change. Alaska, Washington and Oregon have petitioned for de-listing, which could reduce the regulatory burden on some public and private sector activities.
