It’s a big night for new artwork in Petersburg, with a museum show opening and two gallery openings following tonight’s Christmas tree lighting. Joe Viechnicki talked with some of the local artists about the work that’ll be on display around town tonight.

Petersburg school officials are proposing a long-term, local funding plan for the district. It calls on the city to gradually ratchet-up local education spending over the next decade. The idea is to plan ahead for the anticipated loss of federal funds. The School Board and City Council met in an informal work session to discuss the issue Monday.

Petersburg’s Harbor Board and staff are recommending the installation of security cameras in the harbor parking lots. The idea was prompted mainly by misuse of harbor garbage dumpsters as well as vandalism to restrooms and thefts from cars. The system could also be used to keep an eye on the floats and to provide a video record of harbor comings and goings….in case a crime does occur. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Harbormaster Jim Stromdahl about the issue:

They say road crews have been asked to be conservative with spending, but crews will be able to work overtime if necessary for public safety. Depending on the weather, DOT officials say they may ask lawmakers for more money. That stands in contrast to earlier statements from the agency.

Petersburg’s school board approved amended handbooks for local middle and high school students Tuesday. District officials made changes to rules for extra-curriculars, absences and added new procedures for responding to death threats.
