Managers expect good Tanner and poor golden king commercial crab fisheries

Southeast Alaska’s upcoming commercial Tanner crab fishery could bring another high harvest while the Golden King crab fishery will likely be low. Both fisheries open Tuesday, February 12.

Petersburg borough to test new deicer on paved roads

The State of Alaska uses the liquid deicer, magnesium chloride, for roads it maintains in Petersburg. Now, the borough is considering using it on some other local roads because it could be cheaper than sand with less clean up.

Clausen Museum channels old-time parties for fundraiser

People traveled for miles by boat for parties at Hazel Anderson Miller’s fox farm in the 1930s. She lived on Whitney Island near Cape Fanshaw north of Petersburg. That party atmosphere is being celebrated this Saturday night at the Sons of Norway Hall. It’s called, “Frontier Folk: A Night at Hazel’s”.

Homeless counts adding up in Petersburg

Like other communities, Petersburg has homeless people…yet how many are there and how do volunteers reach them to help? Those are complex questions to answer. But recent homeless surveys are giving Petersburg organizations a little bit more information to go on.
