Petersburg High School’s varsity volleyball split a home and away series with Wrangell last weekend. The Vikings lost to the Wolves in four games Friday night in Wrangell before sweeping a home match on Saturday night. It was also the last home match for five seniors on this team.

Petersburg’s three schools Monday honored those who have served our country. Dozens of local veterans were there to shake hands with students and hear their thoughts on that service. And on the day after the 100th anniversary of the end World War One, Vietnam War veteran Grant Trask wore an infantry uniform from World War One. It belonged to Carl Schiller, the grandfather of two former Petersburg students, Glorianne Wollen and her brother J.P. DeBoer.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday voted to send a letter to the chief of the U.S. Forest Service asking the federal agency to fix problems with oversight and administration of timber sales on the Tongass National Forest. Area residents who have been pushing the municipal government to take a stance on the issue said this letter did not go far enough.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday voted to move forward with replacement of the trash baler at the borough’s solid waste facility. The machine compacts the community’s garbage before it’s tied with wire and then shipped south to a landfill.

Petersburg High School’s varsity volleyball team won four matches and lost two on its home court over the weekend, securing the third seed among the region’s 2A teams.
The Vikings beat Skagway, Metlakatla, Klawock and Haines while losing to Craig and Wrangell. The match against the Wolves went to five games late Saturday night. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Jaime Cabral about the weekend’s action.
