42nd Oktoberfest art share on tap for Saturday

It’s a big weekend at Petersburg’s pool, gym and high school. The Southeast regional high school swim meet runs Friday and Saturday in the pool and a quilt show and auction is on display at the high school commons Saturday. In the community gym, it’s the 42nd year for Oktoberfest Art Share, a gathering of vendors selling arts, crafts, holiday items and food. It’s sponsored by the Muskeg Maleriers, a local group dedicated to rosemaling, or traditional Norwegian decorative painting.

Fish and Game review recommends hatchery stray research in Farragut River

A recent review of hatchery salmon by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is recommending follow up research in one king salmon river north of Petersburg. King salmon produced at Southeast Alaska hatcheries have been found at a higher level in the Farragut River, on the mainland about 30 miles from Petersburg. Scientists would like to study that issue further.
