PHS baseball opens season with three home losses

Petersburg High School’s baseball team lost three home games to Ketchikan to open the season Friday and Saturday. The Vikings lost 13-0 Friday and then 13-1 and 17-6 on Saturday.

PHS track teams make strong showing in Ketchikan

Petersburg High School’s girls track team took second and the boys team was fourth at a meet Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 in Ketchikan.
Thunder Mountain took first for the girls teams while Ketchikan was first for the boys. Petersburg is competing against larger 3A and 4A schools in Southeast and took top spots in numerous events.

Petersburg’s fleet blessing kicks off fishing season

Community members gathered at Petersburg’s Sons of Norway Hall Sunday for the blessing of the fleet. The annual service marks the start of a new year’s fishing season and remembers those who are no longer here. It’s put on each year by the Petersburg Ministerial Association, the Petersburg Vessel Owners and the Sons of Norway and it was held indoors this year on a rainy afternoon.

Young PHS baseball team opens season at home

The high school baseball season opens for the Petersburg at home this weekend with three games scheduled against the Kayhi Kings of Ketchikan. It’s a young Vikings team in 2018. The group has been practicing about a month and a half, with about three weeks of that out of the gym and up at the ballfields once volunteers helped clear the fields of snow. Joe Viechnicki spoke with head coach Jim Engell about this year’s team.

Petersburg seeks updated info on land entitlement

Petersburg is sending a letter to top officials in the state’s Department of Natural Resources asking for updated information for the borough’s land entitlement. That land grant for the municipality was increased last year in legislation passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. The borough has until October 1st of this year to submit all its requests for land from the state.
