Petersburg assembly may consider resolution on timber sale losses

Some residents of Petersburg are asking the borough assembly to pass a resolution seeking accounting for losses on U.S. Forest Service timber sales on Kupreanof and Prince of Wales islands. It was a discussion topic at the assembly’s meeting Monday, April 16 and may come up at a future meeting.

Wrangell artist opens first show at Petersburg gallery

A young artist from Wrangell opens the first solo show of her career at a gallery in Petersburg Friday, April 13. Jaynee Fritzinger will be showing about a dozen original paintings, along with some prints at Firelight Gallery and Framing. It’s work she’s done over the past year, using acrylics and water color paints. She also works with pen and ink drawings and reproduces her work on stickers and magnets.

People in Petersburg Thursday night, April 12 can learn about the global market for seaweed, uses for the product, as well as the challenges a new industry will face in Alaska. The Petersburg Science Series is offering a presentation by Erick Ask, who works in the seaweed business for a division of the giant global company DuPont.

Former Anchorage mayor to speak on diabetes at Petersburg health fair

A former mayor of Anchorage and authority on living with diabetes will be one of the speakers at Petersburg’s community health fair this Saturday.
Rick Mystrom was diagnosed with type one diabetes while attending Colorado University. He later moved to Anchorage and worked in sales and advertising, before getting into politics and leading Anchorage’s bid for the 1992 Olympic games. Mystrom was on the Anchorage assembly and was elected to two terms as mayor in the 1990s. Over 50 years after his diagnosis, he’s written three books about living with diabetes and healthy eating. His latest focuses on type two diabetes.
