The commercial sac roe herring fishery in Sitka Sound goes on two-hour notice Tuesday, March 20 at 7 a.m. That means the first opening could be as soon as two hours after that. The guideline harvest level for this year’s fishery is just over 11,000 tons, down from the nearly 14,000 tons caught in the commercial fishery last year.

Petersburg police say they have found items used to make and distribute methamphetamine at a residence on Cornelius Road. A press release from the department says officers served multiple search warrants Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16 at the home on Cornelius Road along with another unnamed location.

Petersburg resident Michael Sheldon is running for governor. The 62-year old Republican is a handyman, former Alaska Marine Highway employee, fisherman and mechanic. His first foray into state politics was an unsuccessful write in campaign for state senate he launched one month before the 2016 election.

A Petersburg man in July will be starting up a year-long term as national president of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The fraternal organization is dedicated to patriotism, charitable giving and service programs in communities across the country.

Four people are finalists for the top job at Petersburg Medical Center. A hiring committee was scheduled to meet in executive session Thursday, March 15 to interview three candidates for CEO and hoped to schedule an interview with the fourth for next week. The new CEO will replace Liz Woodyard who plans to retire at the end of June.
