Petersburg’s assembly Monday approved sending the mayor and borough manager to Washington D.C. to lobby for the community’s interests. That trip could happen sometime in January or February. Not everyone was on board with spending the money for travel.

Southeast Alaska winter troll fishery to remain open

Commercial trolling for king salmon in Southeast Alaska will stay open this winter beyond December. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced the winter season will be open until further notice and could stay open until mid-March. That depends on any measures the Board of Fish adopts in January to protect wild Chinook returning to Southeast Alaska rivers.

Southeast agency won’t spend power line grant money

Some of the state grant money for designing an electrical transmission line between the Southeast Alaska communities of Petersburg and Kake will not be spent on that project. The Southeast Alaska Power Agency, or SEAPA owns transmission lines and hydro-electric plants powering Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan. SEAPA received a 2013 grant for two million dollars from the Alaska Energy Authority for final design and engineering work on a power line to connect Kake to its system.

Young fire fighters train in Petersburg

Some local teenagers have been spending one night a week this fall learning many of the skills needed to become a volunteer fire fighter. The junior fire fighters program is in its eighth year and has some youngsters thinking about joining the force when they’re older.
