The number of students in Petersburg schools is trending downward again. After a few years of increases, student enrollment dropped this year and it’s projected to fall again next year.

Petersburg High School volleyball wrapped up its regular season with a home-and-away series against Wrangell last week. The Vikings won all three matches but the Wolves forced five games on Friday and four games on Saturday. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Jaime Cabral about the end of the regular season, his senior class and the upcoming regional tournament this week in Petersburg.

Petersburg High School’s wrestling team hosted seven other teams last weekend and held two scramble-style tournaments Friday and Saturday. The Vikings came in second both days to the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves.

There’s information Monday, November 6 in Petersburg on the possibilities for starting a needle exchange in town. Noa Hockstein is a nursing student working at Petersburg’s public health center and is a senior in nursing school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is in Petersburg for her public health rotation and her capstone project, which focuses on some issue impacting public or community health.

A record 28 people played in the fourth annual Annabelle Baker Poker Tournament October 22nd at the Tides Inn in Petersburg. The event raises money for Beat the Odds cancer treatment, travel and support.
