Southeast Alaska Native literacy program expands

A Southeast Alaska Native cultural organization is expanding a children’s literacy program into nine other communities in the region. The Sealaska Heritage Institute announced this week it will be partnering with the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska’s Head Start to offer the Baby Raven Reads program in communities around Southeast. Baby Raven Reads promotes literacy, language skills and school readiness for Alaska Native pre-school aged children. A pilot program in operated in Juneau for three years but ended this year.

Hatchery non-profit board meets in Petersburg

The board of directors for a Southeast hatchery non-profit meets in Petersburg Friday, October 27. The Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association, or SSRAA , is based in Ketchikan. The private non-profit was started in 1976 and produces chum, coho and king salmon at release sites around the southern panhandle.

ANB/ANS Petersburg camp members return from Portland convention

Four Petersburg residents attended the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp convention in Portland, Oregon earlier this month. The four were Petersburg’s ANB camp 16 president Joe Stewart, ANS camp 16 president Barbara Erickson, Charlie Streuli, who is the grand sergeant-at-arms, along with Ross Nannauck III who was elected first grand vice president.

Booths nearly filled for Petersburg’s Oktoberfest

Saturday, October 28th is the 41st annual Oktoberfest Art Share, a day of arts, crafts and food sales in Petersburg’s community gym. It will feature homemade food and items for sale, for people looking to get a start on their holiday shopping.
