The U.S. Forest Service has released a new map for the Petersburg Ranger District. The map covers Mitkof, Kupreanof and Kuiu islands and the 1.6 million acres of National Forest on the Petersburg district. It replaces three older two-tone maps of the area with one new chart with color shading showing mountain contours.

Students from Petersburg High School last month completed their annual survey of the position of the LeConte Glacier on the mainland near Petersburg. The southernmost tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere has shown a little change since last year.

Petersburg High School’s girls track team took fourth place at the small schools state championships near Palmer last weekend. The boys team took ninth place. And Petersburg’s most decorated track athlete finished out her high school career with four more state titles.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Tuesday approved a budget for the upcoming fiscal year that starts in July. Assembly members made a few changes to the final spending plan and didn’t have the votes to overturn an increase in the property tax rate approved earlier this month.
