A Petersburg woman took first place in the Prince of Wales Island Marathon last Saturday. Teacher Jo Ann Day was the top woman finisher in the 26.2 mile race finishing in a time of four hours 22 minutes and 10 seconds.

Petersburg High School Tuesday handed out diplomas to 29 members of the class of 2017 at a commencement ceremony in the high school gym.

The winner in Petersburg’s salmon derby came in with just minutes to spare and was caught right out in front of the harbor this year. Karrie Byrer weighed in her fish at 4:52 Monday afternoon May 29, with the derby closing at 5 p.m.

The Petersburg High School class of 2017 receives their diplomas Tuesday, May 30 in a commencement ceremony at the high school gym. Thirty two are expected to graduate in a class that has enjoyed success academically and athletically. The keynote speaker is retiring middle school teacher Rob Schwartz. Joe Viechnicki spoke with high school principal Rick Dormer about the class of 2017.

Petersburg’s former mayor Mark Jensen resigned this month following a disagreement over a proposed re-organization of department heads at the borough assembly’s last meeting. Jensen says he doesn’t have the energy to continue on as mayor with that proposal still a possibility.
