There’s a good weather forecast and more prize money for Petersburg’s 36th annual salmon derby, which opens Friday, May 26 and runs through the Memorial Day weekend.

Southeast Alaska spring troll fishery shut down for lack of king salmon

The spring season for commercial salmon trolling in Southeast Alaska is shutting down Monday, May 29 except for a few areas near hatchery salmon release sites. The spring season began in May and was to run through the end of June. However, poor returns of king salmon are prompting the closure.

PHS track teams second at regionals

Petersburg High School track teams took second place at the regional meet at Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau over the weekend. The Sitka Wolves took the team titles for both the boys and girls. Next up it’s the state championships this weekend.

Addiction services discussions this week in Petersburg, Wrangell

Representatives from the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, SEARHC, are holding discussions in Petersburg and Wrangell this week on drug and alcohol addiction and resources that are available in the two communities.

Stikine River mouth closing to king sport fishing

Part way through Wrangell’s salmon derby and just before the start of Petersburg’s derby, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is closing sport fishing around the mouth of the Stikine River because of low returns of king salmon.
